title: Script editor
description: Edit an episode's script line by line.
---

The script editor is the script panel of an [AI Podcasts](/podcasts-and-episodes) Episode in the Studio. It opens once the first line is playable; see [Watch it generate](/getting-started/creating-your-first-episode#watch-it-generate).

## How the script is organized

The script is split into numbered chapters. Click a chapter's title to rename it. Chapters hold speech blocks, one per line of dialogue, each with a Host name above its text.

Edits save about a second after you stop typing. You can't reorder chapters here; to change the order of audio, drag segments in the [timeline editor](/podcasts-and-episodes/using-the-timeline-editor).

## Speech blocks

Click into a block and edit the text like a document. To change who speaks, click the Host name above the block and pick from your [Characters](/characters-and-voices) that have a Voice. The change applies to that block only. A block with no Host shows No host in red, and its audio button stays hidden until you assign one.

A block is dimmed when it has no audio yet or its audio no longer matches its text or Host; see [out-of-sync detection](/podcasts-and-episodes/regenerating-individual-segments#out-of-sync-detection). Its button shows which:

- Generate Audio (highlighted): a new line, or one the last run couldn't voice, for example because the voice provider refused the wording. Click it to retry. If the provider refuses again, edit the wording or switch the Host.
- Regenerate Audio: the text, Host or a pronunciation rule changed. Hover the button to see which.

If many lines are affected, see [Episode generation failed](/podcasts-and-episodes/episode-generation-failed).

Lines that need audio don't block output. Rendering, publishing or downloading first asks whether to leave them out; see [Choose which audio to render](/podcasts-and-episodes/downloading-video-and-audio#choose-which-audio-to-render).

## Toolbar and menus

Pronunciation Guide, at the top right of the script, fixes [words read wrongly](/characters-and-voices/pronunciation-guide).

The three-dot Import / Export menu sits in the Episode actions area, not the script toolbar:

- Import Script: see [Use your own script](/podcasts-and-episodes/use-your-own-script). Disabled while a render runs.
- Export Script: saves a `.txt` file. See [Download the script as text](/podcasts-and-episodes/downloading-video-and-audio#download-the-script-as-text).
- Delete Episode.

## Editing while an episode renders

Downloading, publishing and re-rendering a share link each start a render, which reads the saved script. While it runs, the script shows "Editing disabled while rendering" and the script and timeline are read-only. Pending edits save first, and editing resumes when the render finishes.

Generating or regenerating audio locks only the block being regenerated, and the rest of the script stays editable.
